INTERSOS Ukraine Mission is delivering urgently needed medical supplies to the newly accessible areas of Kherson participating in an UN-led Inter-agency convoy, only days after the heaviest fighting has ceased. “The supplies on the way to Kherson include life-saving trauma and emergency surgery kits and are estimated to serve 26.600 patients, ensuring that healthcare facilities can continue functioning. Our teams on the ground are committed to rapidly responding to humanitarian needs in hard-to-reach frontline areas,” says Aleksandra K. Wisniewska, Head of Ukraine Mission.
In recently retaken areas of Ukraine, humanitarian conditions are dire due to the extensive destruction of infrastructure caused by heavy fighting and the presence of mines. The people of Kherson are struggling to meet basic needs, adding to the trauma of having endured months of constant bombardments and forced displacement. The city faces a shortage of water and electricity, markets are running low on food and health facilities lack medicine and medical equipment. With the beginning of harsh winter, these vulnerabilities are only exacerbated.
INTERSOS entered Ukraine at the beginning of March and has ongoing operations in Lviv, Vinnytsia, Poltava, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Mykolaiv Oblasts providing life-saving protection and medical assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their host communities.
