It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we share the news of the sudden passing of Marco Rotelli, former Secretary General and President of INTERSOS.
Marco began his journey with INTERSOS in the early 2000s in Afghanistan. Over time, he worked with dedication in various missions and, in 2011, he became Secretary General of INTERSOS, leading the consolidation and constant growth of the organization in difficult times. Subsequently, from 2016 to 2022, he assumed the role of President, continuing to provide constant guidance, support, inspiration and analysis to the board of directors and management.
We share these notes knowing that they are only a brief and insufficient summary of the long journey we have traveled together and of the many stages that characterized it. For INTERSOS, Marco was a pillar. His commitment to humanitarian work and his belief in advancing our mission and values have helped make INTERSOS the organization it is today. His vision, passion and integrity have left an indelible mark on our organization and on each of us who had the privilege of working alongside him.
At this moment, we want to be close to Marco’s wife and our former colleague, Anna, his son and his relatives and share their pain.
This is shocking news! Marco and I were close to each other after I joined INTERSOS following my retirement from UNHCR in 2011.. I will miss him immensely. In fact it Marco who recruited me in INTERSOS. My sympathies go to his family and all at INTERSOS. May his soul Rest In Peace. Abraham ABRAHAM.

Dear Marco,
The news of Marco’s sudden passing is still sinking in. It was a shock, reminding us to appreciate life and not take anything for granted.
I met Marco shortly after joining INTERSOS, during his visit to Geneva from Nairobi as ICVA’s Regional Representative. As INTERSOS’ President, he warmly welcomed me and provided a clear vision and advice concerning my role as INTERSOS representative in Geneva. I’m forever grateful for his guidance, which helped me orientate and prioritise my work.
I also fondly remember many of our subsequent meetings and discussions. Marco’s vast knowledge and experience offered valuable perspectives on humanitarian challenges. I’ll always cherish his brilliant mind, knowledge, experience, positive energy, and enthusiasm.
To Marco’s family, my deepest condolences. It is difficult to find comfort now, but please know that many of us within the organisation and a wider humanitarian community are thinking of you. Marco will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, dear Marco.
Sincerely,
Miro, INTERSOS Geneva
